I carmelized the onions and garlic very perfectly from the butter and olive oil to mellow out their onion-yness.

YUM! Fantastic recipe. We served with greek yogurt, apple chunks and toasted the seeds within the squash! Totally forgot the butter at the end plus the syrup… but turned out wonderfully!
